Lemon Zest Mango (Mangifera indica ‘Lemon Zest’) — Cultivar Profile

Origin & Breeder:
• The Lemon Zest mango was developed in Florida, USA by Gary Zill of the Zill mango breeding program in Boynton Beach. Its original selection name was #27-1 before being named Lemon Zest and released commercially in the early 2010s.

Parentage:
Lemon Zest is a seedling of the Lemon Meringue (Po Pyu Kalay) mango, selected for larger size and a more intense citrus character than its parent.

Tree & Growth Characteristics

Tree Habit: Vigorous grower with an upright canopy typical of many Florida mango selections.
Mature Size: Can reach medium to large size in the landscape under good conditions.
Seed Type: Polyembryonic — seedlings can produce clones of the mother plant under ideal conditions (but grafted trees are clonal).
Season: Mid to late-season, generally fruiting from July into August in Florida.

Fruit Description

Appearance: Fruit typically has a bright yellow skin when mature.
Flesh: Yellow, juicy, fiberless, and smooth, with a pleasing aromatic character.
Flavor: Sweet with a distinct citrusy, lemon-like aroma and sweet tang, often described as lemon-candy or lemon-orange balanced flavor.
Size & Shape: Generally larger and more oval-oblong than its parent Lemon Meringue.
Texture: Sink-to-fiberless melting flesh prized for fresh eating or desserts.

Disease Resistance & Susceptibility

Anthracnose: Lemon Zest is considered quite susceptible to anthracnose, one of the most significant mango diseases in humid regions like much of Florida. Trees and fruit can show symptoms without fungicide protection.
Powdery Mildew: Susceptibility to powdery mildew has been reported, particularly in humid climates without control measures.
Bacterial Black Spot: Also tends to be susceptible, similar to other citrus-flavored Florida selections, especially in wetter weather.
General Notes: Because of these susceptibilities, many growers recommend Lemon Zest only in areas with good air circulation or drier seasonal conditions, and fungicide sprays are often needed for healthy production in high-humidity zones.
Comparative Notes: In grower forums, Lemon Zest often ranks lower for disease resistance compared to more tolerant cultivars — it can struggle more with anthracnose and other fungal issues in humid Florida.

Summary

Lemon Zest is a flavorful Florida-bred mango prized for its sweet, citrusy, lemon-infused flavor and smooth fiberless flesh, often rated highly by mango enthusiasts for eating quality. Its Florida origin and development by Gary Zill make it part of the state’s rich mango heritage. However, it is not a disease-resistant variety and is known to be susceptible to anthracnose, powdery mildew, and bacterial spot — traits to consider if you’re evaluating it for humid region cultivation.
